Twelve days from Beijing to Shanghai, with a stretch of river between limestone peaks in the middle. China is best travelled when you give it time to change scale: from the Forbidden City to a rice terrace, and from there to a six-hundred-metre tower.

Day 01 · Spain / Beijing
Overnight flight.
Day 02 · Beijing
Arrival and the rest of the day free to reset the clock.
Day 03 · Beijing
Tiananmen, the Forbidden City with its nine hundred and eighty rooms, and the Summer Palace by the lake. In the evening, Chinese acrobatics.
Day 04 · Beijing / Great Wall / Beijing
The Wall at Juyongguan, steeper and far less crowded than Badaling. A Ming tomb on the way and Peking duck for dinner.
Day 05 · Beijing / Xi’an
The Temple of Heaven, where locals dance and play mahjong at first light, and the flight to Xi’an.
Day 06 · Xi’an
The Terracotta Army: eight thousand soldiers, every face different, buried for two thousand years. Then the Great Mosque and the old quarter inside the Ming walls.
Day 07 · Xi’an / Guilin
Flight to Guilin on the Li river. Free afternoon.
Day 08 · Guilin
Sailing the Li between the karst hills that appear on the twenty-yuan note. Lunch on board.
Day 09 · Guilin / Shanghai
The illuminated Reed Flute Cave and the flight to Shanghai.
Day 10 · Shanghai
Yuyuan Garden, the Jade Buddha Temple, and the Bund at dusk with Pudong lighting up across the water.
Day 11 · Shanghai / Spain
Flight home.
Day 12 · Spain
Arrival.
