Fourteen days from Delhi to the Kathmandu valley, by way of the Taj Mahal at sunrise and the ghats of Varanasi, where the Ganges organises everything. India is not visited so much as crossed, and you come out of it different.
Day by day
Day 01 · Spain / Delhi
Arrival and transfer.
Day 02 · Delhi
The Jama Masjid, the Raj Ghat where Gandhi was cremated, and the Qutub Minar, standing since 1193. Old and New Delhi are two cities and both are worth seeing.
Day 03 · Delhi / Samode / Jaipur
Lunch at the sixteenth-century Samode Palace and on to Jaipur, the pink city.
Day 04 · Jaipur / Amber / Jaipur
The Amber fort on its hill, the Maharaja’s City Palace and the Jantar Mantar, a stone observatory that still tells the time. Dinner in a haveli.
Day 05 · Jaipur / Fatehpur Sikri / Agra
Fatehpur Sikri, the city Akbar built and abandoned fourteen years later because it ran out of water. Intact.
Day 06 · Agra
The Taj Mahal at sunrise, which is the only hour to see it. Then the Red Fort and Akbar’s tomb at Sikandra.
Day 07 · Agra / Gwalior
The Shatabdi Express to Gwalior. The fort and the Man Mandir palace with its blue tilework.
Day 08 · Gwalior / Delhi
A free morning and the train back to Delhi.
Day 09 · Delhi / Varanasi
Flight to the oldest continuously inhabited city on earth. At dusk, the aarti ceremony on the riverbank.
Day 10 · Varanasi / Kathmandu
A boat on the Ganges at sunrise, among ritual bathers and funeral pyres. Flight to Nepal in the afternoon.
Day 11 · Kathmandu
The Kumari Palace, the Swayambhunath stupa with its painted eyes, and Patan square, an open-air museum.
Day 12 · Kathmandu
A free day in the valley. Bhaktapur is worth all of it.
Day 13 · Kathmandu / Delhi
Flight back to Delhi.
Day 14 · Delhi / Spain
An early-morning flight and the end of the trip.
