Eight days to understand why Japan resembles nowhere else. It starts in the noise of Tokyo and ends in the silence of a Kyoto garden, and in between there is a train doing three hundred an hour and a mountain that only shows itself when it feels like it.
Day by day
Day 01 · Spain / Tokyo
Overnight flight. You sleep badly and arrive feeling you have skipped a whole day.
Day 02 · Tokyo
Arrival and transfer. We plan nothing else: the body takes a day to land, and Tokyo is better met slowly.
Day 03 · Tokyo
Senso-ji first thing, while it still smells of incense and there are no queues. Then Meiji Shrine among the trees, and Ginza at dusk when the windows light up.
Day 04 · Tokyo / Hakone / Tokyo
Lake Ashi by boat. On a clear day Fuji appears whole above the water; on a cloudy one it appears in pieces, which is also worth it. Cable car up Mount Komagatake.
Day 05 · Tokyo / Kyoto / Nara
Bullet train to Kyoto. In the afternoon, Nara: Todai-ji with its fifteen-metre Buddha, and the deer that have been walking that park for thirteen hundred years.
Day 06 · Kyoto
Kinkaku-ji mirrored in its pond, the gardens of Heian Shrine, and Gion after dark, which is when that street makes sense.
Day 07 · Kyoto
A day with no schedule. Some people take the train to Hiroshima and Miyajima; others walk the bamboo grove at Arashiyama and eat their way through Nishiki market.
Day 08 · Kyoto / Osaka / Spain
Transfer to Osaka and the flight home.
