The Amazon is not something you see from a viewpoint. You go in, you travel and you wait, and what appears is the river’s decision. This route combines the upper Amazon, covered by small ship, with the Madre de Dios forest, which holds the highest recorded diversity of birds and butterflies on the planet.
Day by day
Day 01 · Spain / Lima
Direct flight.
Day 02 · Iquitos
Flight to the largest city in the world with no road access. In the afternoon, Belén, the floating market.
Day 03 · Pacaya-Samiria
Aboard a twelve-cabin vessel and into the reserve, twenty thousand square kilometres of flooded forest.
Day 04 · Pacaya-Samiria
Skiff excursions at dawn and dusk, which is when there is activity. Pink river dolphins, sloths, monkeys and dozens of bird species a day.
Day 05 · Pacaya-Samiria
A forest walk with a local guide, piranha fishing, and a night outing with torches to look for caiman.
Day 06 · Iquitos / Lima
Disembark and connect.
Day 07 · Tambopata
Flight to Puerto Maldonado and three hours upriver to the lodge, inside the reserve.
Day 08 · Macaw clay lick
Out before dawn to the clay wall where hundreds of macaws and parrots come down for minerals every morning.
Day 09 · Lake Sandoval
A blackwater oxbow with giant otters, of which few remain and where a stable family lives. A night walk in the afternoon.
Day 10 · Tambopata / Lima
Back downriver and a flight. A last night in Lima.
Day 11 · Lima / Spain
Flight home.
Day 12 · Spain
Arrival.
