Eastern Canada
13 days
Thirteen days through French Canada and Ontario, where the villages are named after saints and the forests turn red in October. Whales in the Saguenay fjord and a walled city that looks transplanted from Normandy.
Day by day
Day 01 · Spain / Montreal
Flight via a European city. Arrival and accommodation.
Day 02 · Montreal
The old town and its cobbles, Mont-Royal, and the financial district with its thirty kilometres of underground city, much appreciated in January.
Day 03 · Montreal / Lac St-Jean
Along the north shore of the St Lawrence. Lunch in a sugar shack in La Mauricie, with maple syrup made on the spot.
Day 04 · Lac St-Jean / Saguenay
The St-Félicien reserve by panoramic train, where the animals roam and the visitors are caged. Val Jalbert, a ghost town with a waterfall higher than Niagara.
Day 05 · Saguenay
The salmon run, a trappers’ camp, lunch by the lake and a ride in a rabaska canoe, the sort that takes twelve paddlers.
Day 06 · Saguenay / Charlevoix
The Saguenay fjord and a whale-watching cruise at Tadoussac, where up to thirteen species gather. Ferry to Isle-aux-Coudres.
Day 07 · Charlevoix / Quebec
The Laurentian mountains, the walled city of Quebec — the only one north of Mexico — and Montmorency Falls, thirty metres higher than Niagara.
Day 08 · Quebec
A free day inside the walls. The Château Frontenac is the most photographed hotel in the world, and you see why.
Day 09 · Quebec / St-Sauveur
The Laurentides region, with a stop at a bison farm.
Day 10 · St-Sauveur / Ottawa
A lumberjack camp with maple products, then the capital: Rideau Hall, the Rideau Canal — in winter the longest skating rink in the world — and Parliament.
Day 11 · Ottawa / Toronto
A cruise through the Thousand Islands, which are in fact eighteen hundred, and a panoramic tour of Toronto.
Day 12 · Toronto / Spain
Flight home.
