French Polynesia is a hundred and eighteen islands spread over an area the size of Europe. Each archipelago is different: the Society Islands are green mountains inside a lagoon, the Tuamotus are flat atolls with the best diving in the Pacific. It is worth mixing them rather than staying only with the postcard.
Day by day
Day 01 · Spain / Papeete
Flight via Paris or Los Angeles. You cross the date line.
Day 02 · Tahiti
Arrival and a night on the main island. The Papeete market the following morning.
Day 03 · Moorea
Thirty minutes by ferry. The island has two deep bays and a mountainous interior almost nobody climbs.
Day 04 · Moorea
Out to swim with rays and blacktip sharks in the lagoon, and a 4×4 up to the belvedere through pineapple fields.
Day 05 · Taha’a
Flight to Raiatea and a boat across. Taha’a is the vanilla island and shares its lagoon with Raiatea.
Day 06 · Taha’a
The coral garden, where the current carries you over the reef without swimming, and a visit to a vanilla plantation and a pearl farm.
Day 07 · Bora Bora
A twenty-minute flight. The lagoon is the one everyone has seen in photographs, and seeing it for real does not disappoint.
Day 08 · Bora Bora
Around the island by boat, stopping to swim with mantas and eating on a motu.
Day 09 · Rangiroa
Flight to the Tuamotus. The second largest atoll in the world: a ring of sand eighty kilometres across enclosing a lagoon.
Day 10 · Tiputa Pass
A dive or a drift snorkel through the pass, with resident dolphins and grey reef sharks. It is one of the best-known dive sites in the Pacific.
Day 11 · Rangiroa / Papeete
Back to Tahiti and the international flight that night.
Day 12 · Spain
Arrival, having crossed the date line again.
