Water in the Desert

Maun · Okavango Delta · Moremi · Savuti · Chobe · Victoria Falls

11 days

The Okavango is a river that never reaches the sea. It spreads out inside the Kalahari and evaporates, and on the way it creates an inland delta where water and desert live side by side. Botswana has decided few people should go in and that they should pay for it, and the result is whole floodplains without another vehicle in sight.

Day by day

Day 01 · Spain / Johannesburg

Overnight flight.

Day 02 · Johannesburg / Maun / Okavango Delta

Connection to Maun and a light aircraft into the delta. The flight takes twenty minutes and you see elephants from the air, moving along the channels.

Day 03 · Okavango Delta

A morning by mokoro, the canoe poled through the papyrus. You move in silence and at water level, which is another way of seeing the place.

Day 04 · Okavango Delta

A walking safari with an armed guide, and a game drive in the afternoon. Walking changes the scale: you read tracks, you hear before you see.

Day 05 · Moremi Reserve

Transfer by light aircraft. Moremi has mopane woodland, flooded plains and one of the most stable African wild dog populations on the continent.

Day 06 · Moremi

A full day of game drives. Water crossings are part of the route and the vehicle goes in up to the middle of the wheel.

Day 07 · Savuti

Sand, baobabs and a channel that dries up and refills every few decades without anyone quite knowing why. The Savuti lions hunt young elephants, behaviour recorded almost nowhere else.

Day 08 · Savuti / Chobe

North to the Chobe river. In the afternoon, a boat safari: elephants come down to drink and cross in groups of a hundred or more.

Day 09 · Chobe / Victoria Falls

Border crossing and transfer to the falls. You hear the drop before you see it, and the spray is visible from several kilometres away.

Day 10 · Victoria Falls

A morning walking the park, soaked the whole way, and the flight home.

Day 11 · Spain
