Winter in the Yukon
10 days
The Yukon in winter is twenty below, five hours of daylight, and one of the highest aurora probabilities on the planet, because it sits directly under the auroral oval and the sky is dry. You sleep in cabins with wood stoves and go out at night to look up.
Day by day
Day 01 · Spain / Vancouver
Direct flight.
Day 02 · Vancouver
The city, Stanley Park and Granville Island market. Getting onto local time.
Day 03 · Whitehorse
Flight north, two and a half hours. Arrival and a first night hunting auroras outside town.
Day 04 · Whitehorse
Dog sledding with a musher who runs the Yukon Quest, learning to drive the team rather than just ride along. A second aurora night.
Day 05 · Lake Laberge
Snowmobiles on the frozen lake and a night in an isolated cabin, with no light for fifty kilometres.
Day 06 · Takhini
Open-air hot springs at thirty-eight degrees with the air at minus twenty-five, which is a strange experience and well worth having.
Day 07 · Dawson City
Flight or the winter road north. The gold rush town of 1898 still has dirt streets and wooden sidewalks.
Day 08 · Dawson City
Gwich’in and Tr’ondëk culture, the gold claims, and a last aurora night, which up here are more frequent still.
Day 09 · Whitehorse / Vancouver
Back south.
Day 10 · Vancouver / Spain
Flight home.
