On the far side of the Atlas, Morocco stops being cities and becomes oases, mud kasbahs and a road that narrows until the tarmac gives out. It is four or five hours of driving a day, but the landscape changes every half hour and that keeps it from feeling long.
Day by day
Day 01 · Spain / Marrakech
Direct flight. Dinner in a riad in the medina.
Day 02 · Marrakech
The city in the morning, with the Ben Youssef medersa and the gardens. Afternoon free, which in Marrakech means getting lost on purpose.
Day 03 · Marrakech / Aït Ben Haddou / Ouarzazate
Over the Atlas by the Tizi n’Tichka pass at two thousand two hundred metres. Aït Ben Haddou is an entire adobe ksar on a hillside, and you climb to the granary at the top.
Day 04 · Dades Valley
The road of a thousand kasbahs and the Dades gorges, where the road switchbacks up a wall in a series of hairpins that has been photographed a thousand times and still lands.
Day 05 · Todra Gorge / Erg Chebbi
Three-hundred-metre walls with a river and palm trees at the bottom. In the afternoon, into the desert and a night in camp among the dunes.
Day 06 · Erg Chebbi
Sunrise over the erg, which lasts twenty minutes and is worth the alarm. A slow day and a second night in camp, with no light anywhere around.
Day 07 · Draa Valley / Agdz
A hundred and thirty kilometres of continuous palm grove along the Draa. You stop at Tamnougalt, a lived-in kasbah still held by the family that built it.
Day 08 · Agdz / Marrakech / Spain
Back over the Atlas by the other side and the flight home.
