Madagascar broke away from Africa eighty-eight million years ago and has gone its own way ever since. Nine out of ten species living there exist nowhere else. It is not a comfortable destination: the roads are slow and the distances lie. In exchange, it looks like nothing else.
Day by day
Day 01 · Spain / Antananarivo
Flight via Paris or Addis Ababa.
Day 02 · Antananarivo
Arrival before dawn and a rest. In the afternoon, the upper town and the craft market.
Day 03 · Andasibe
Three hours east into rainforest. At night, a walk with head torches: the nocturnal lemurs and the chameleons are easier to find in the dark.
Day 04 · Andasibe
The indri is the largest lemur left and calls at dawn with a wail carried three kilometres. You go out early to hear it.
Day 05 · Antananarivo / Morondava
Flight west. In the afternoon, the Avenue of the Baobabs at the hour when the light turns orange and the shadows stretch down the track.
Day 06 · Tsingy de Bemaraha
A hard day on piste heading north, with two river crossings by ferry. The place earns it.
Day 07 · Tsingy de Bemaraha
The tsingy are a forest of limestone needles cut by rain. You cross it in a harness on walkways and suspension bridges, and inside there are canyons full of vegetation.
Day 08 · Morondava / Antsirabe
Back east and onto the RN7, which crosses the country from north to south and is the spine of the trip.
Day 09 · Ranomafana
Montane rainforest, twelve lemur species and a density of life you notice first as noise.
Day 10 · Isalo
An eroded sandstone massif with canyons, natural pools and a sunset that people go to a specific spot to watch for a reason.
Day 11 · Isalo / Ifaty
Down to the southwest and the spiny forest, dry and full of baobabs and plants that resemble nothing else. Arrival on the coast.
Day 12 · Ifaty
A day on the reef, with no plan.
Day 13 · Tuléar / Antananarivo / Spain
Internal flight and international connection.
Day 14 · Spain
Arrival.
