The Serengeti, Unhurried

Tanzania can be done in five days and it can be done in ten. The difference is not how many animals you see, but how long you stand in front of them. This itinerary is built for the second: few stages, short distances between them, and at least two nights everywhere.
Day by day
Day 01 · Spain / Kilimanjaro
One stop on the way. You arrive at night and sleep near the airport, with no long transfer at the end of the day.
Day 02 · Arusha / Tarangire
Two hours by road to Tarangire, a park of baobabs and elephants. In the dry season the herds gather along the river in numbers that are hard to believe.
Day 03 · Tarangire / Karatu
Morning game drive and the climb to the crater rim. The road gains height and the landscape turns from savannah to mountain forest in under an hour.
Day 04 · Ngorongoro Crater
Down into the crater at dawn, when there is still mist on the floor. Some twenty-five thousand animals live inside this closed space, black rhino among them — one of the few places they are genuinely seen.
Day 05 · Ngorongoro / Serengeti
Across the conservation area and into the Serengeti through the Naabi gate. The plain opens and the references disappear: grass, the odd acacia, the horizon.
Day 06 · Central Serengeti
A full day. The Seronera is the best place for cats, because the leopards use the riverine trees and the lions rest on the rock outcrops.
Day 07 · Northern Serengeti
North towards the Mara. Between July and October this is where the river crossings happen; the rest of the year it is the quietest part of the park.
Day 08 · Serengeti
Another full day, leaving before dawn with breakfast in the field. First light changes what you see and how you photograph it.
Day 09 · Serengeti / Arusha / Spain
A light-aircraft flight over the plain, which is the best way to grasp its size, and the connection home.
Day 10 · Spain
Arrival.
