The Coast Road

Two thousand kilometres of coastline, from Washington State to Los Angeles, with the Pacific on your right the whole way. Almost nobody does the Oregon stretch and it is the best of it: cliffs, lighthouses, dunes and fishing towns without a single chain hotel.
Day by day
Day 01 · Spain / Seattle
Flight with one stop. The afternoon at Pike Place.
Day 02 · Seattle
The city in the morning and out to Olympic National Park: beaches strewn with driftwood, temperate rainforest and glacial lakes.
Day 03 · Northern Oregon Coast
Over the Columbia on the Astoria bridge and south on the 101. Cannon Beach and Haystack Rock at sunset.
Day 04 · Southern Oregon Coast
The Florence dunes, the Heceta Head lighthouse and the cliffs at Bandon. A day of continuous stopping.
Day 05 · Redwoods
Into California. The coast redwoods are the tallest trees on the planet, up to a hundred and fifteen metres, and the road runs underneath them.
Day 06 · Mendocino / San Francisco
The coast tightens into hairpins and you come into the city over the Golden Gate.
Day 07 · San Francisco
Alcatraz, booked weeks ahead, the cable cars and the Ferry Building. The afternoon in Sausalito or Berkeley.
Day 08 · Big Sur
A hundred and fifty kilometres of cliff with the Bixby bridge along the way. You take it slowly because there is no other way to take it.
Day 09 · Hearst Castle / Santa Barbara
The house Hearst built on the hill and the elephant seal colony at Piedras Blancas. A night in Santa Barbara.
Day 10 · Los Angeles
Malibu, Santa Monica and into the city.
Day 11 · Los Angeles
The Getty Center, Griffith, and whichever neighbourhood appeals. No theme parks unless you ask.
Day 12 · Los Angeles / Spain
Flight home.
Day 13 · Spain
Arrival.
