El monasterio del Nido del Tigre sobre el valle de Paro

Bhutan

Bhutan, the Country of Valleys

Paro · Thimphu · Punakha · Gangtey · Bumthang · Paro

11 days

Bhutan charges a daily fee to enter, and with it has made sure there are never crowds. There is not a single traffic light in the capital, half the country is forest protected by law, and everyone wears the national dress to work. It is not a stage set: it is a country that decided to change slowly.

Day by day

Day 01 · Spain / Delhi or Kathmandu

Flight with one stop.

Day 02 · Paro

The inbound flight drops between mountains and only a handful of certified pilots are allowed to fly it. A quiet afternoon to adjust to two thousand two hundred metres.

Day 03 · Thimphu

The only capital in the world without a traffic light. The dzong, the traditional arts school, and the great Buddha looking down the valley.

Day 04 · Punakha

The Dochula pass at three thousand metres, with a hundred and eight stupas and, on a clear day, the whole eastern Himalaya behind them.

Day 05 · Punakha

The dzong sits between two rivers and is the most beautiful in the country. A walk to the Chimi Lhakhang temple through rice fields.

Day 06 · Gangtey

A wide, open glacial valley at three thousand metres, where black-necked cranes winter between November and February.

Day 07 · Bumthang

Across to the centre of the country, the area of the oldest temples, some from the seventh century.

Day 08 · Bumthang

Four valleys, small monasteries, and a Swiss brewery that has been there forty years and is now part of the landscape.

Day 09 · Paro

Internal flight or the road back west.

Day 10 · Tiger’s Nest

The climb to Taktsang, five hours there and back, to a monastery hanging on a cliff nine hundred metres above the valley. It is the image of the country and you earn it on foot.

Day 11 · Paro / Spain

Departure flight and connection.

Usually includes

  • International flights and the Druk Air sectors
  • The Sustainable Development Fee and the Bhutanese visa
  • Your own guide and driver throughout
  • Selected hotels and full board, which is the standard arrangement in Bhutan
  • All dzong and monastery entrance fees
  • A travel document with every detail and a direct phone number
