Uzbekistan is where the Silk Road is still visible. Three cities, each with its own character: Khiva is an entire walled town, Bukhara is a living city with two hundred monuments inside it, and Samarkand is the scale and the ambition of Tamerlane. You cover them by train, in under ten days.
Day by day
Day 01 · Spain / Tashkent
Flight via Istanbul.
Day 02 · Tashkent
Arrival before dawn. In the afternoon, the Soviet metro, whose stations were decorated like reception halls, and the Chorsu bazaar.
Day 03 · Khiva
Flight west. Itchan Kala is the walled enclosure and you sleep inside it, which means having it empty at first light and after dark.
Day 04 · Khiva / Bukhara
Across the Kyzylkum desert along the Amu Darya, about six hours with stops.
Day 05 · Bukhara
Poi Kalon, the Ulugh Beg madrasa, and the Samanid mausoleum, which is tenth-century and survived Genghis Khan because it was buried under sand.
Day 06 · Bukhara
A second day, with the artisans’ workshops, the emir’s summer palace, and time to sit in a square, which in Bukhara is the best thing to do.
Day 07 · Shakhrisabz / Samarkand
Over the mountains to Tamerlane’s birthplace and on to Samarkand in the afternoon.
Day 08 · Samarkand
The Registan and its three madrasas, the Shah-i-Zinda necropolis — an alley of blue tile — and the Ulugh Beg observatory, which measured the year to within four seconds in 1420.
Day 09 · Samarkand / Tashkent / Spain
High-speed train and the flight home.
