South Korea went from one of the poorest countries in Asia to what it looks like today in fifty years, and almost everything old that survives did so narrowly. You feel it: a fourteenth-century palace ringed by glass towers, a mountain temple an hour from a district that looks like science fiction.

Day 01 · Spain / Seoul
Direct flight or one stop.
Day 02 · Seoul
Arrival. A walk through Bukchon, the hanok quarter between the two palaces, and dinner in a market.
Day 03 · Seoul
Gyeongbokgung and the changing of the guard, the Jongmyo shrine, and the afternoon in Insadong. At night, Gwangjang, the city’s oldest food market.
Day 04 · DMZ
The demilitarised zone, with the third tunnel and the observation point over North Korea. It is an uncomfortable visit and certainly not a sightseeing one, and it explains half a century of history.
Day 05 · Andong
Train south. Hahoe is a living Confucian village, mud-and-thatch houses held by the same families for six hundred years.
Day 06 · Gyeongju
Capital of the Silla kingdom for a thousand years. Burial mounds in the middle of town, the Cheomseongdae observatory, and a bicycle to get between them.
Day 07 · Gyeongju
Bulguksa and the Seokguram grotto first thing, with the granite Buddha looking out to the East Sea since the eighth century.
Day 08 · Busan
The country’s second city and its port. The Jagalchi fish market in the morning and Gamcheon in the afternoon, a hillside of war refugee housing painted in colours.
Day 09 · Busan / Seoul
High-speed train, two and a half hours. A last free afternoon.
Day 10 · Seoul / Spain
Flight home.
