Barco frente a las islas del parque de Komodo

Indonesia

Java, Komodo and Bali

Yogyakarta · Borobudur · Bromo · Ijen · Komodo · Flores · Bali

14 days

Indonesia is seventeen thousand islands and close to a hundred and thirty active volcanoes, so choosing is compulsory. This route puts together the three things most people come back for: the temples of Java, the volcanoes at dawn and the Flores sea, and leaves Bali until the end, which is when you appreciate it.

Day by day

Day 01 · Spain / Yogyakarta

Flight with one stop.

Day 02 · Yogyakarta

Arrival. The afternoon in the city, with the sultan’s kraton and the batik quarter.

Day 03 · Borobudur and Prambanan

Borobudur is the largest Buddhist temple in the world and carries two thousand six hundred relief panels. You go in as it opens. Prambanan, Hindu and from the same century, is for the end of the day.

Day 04 · Mount Bromo

Flight or train east and up to the caldera. The village sits at two thousand metres and the nights are genuinely cold.

Day 05 · Bromo / Ijen

Sunrise over the sea of sand, with Bromo smoking inside a ten-kilometre caldera. Transfer to Ijen in the afternoon.

Day 06 · Ijen Crater

A climb in the small hours for the blue sulphur flames, visible only before first light, and the turquoise acid lake once it is day.

Day 07 · Labuan Bajo

Flight to Flores and aboard a traditional wooden boat for the next three days.

Day 08 · Komodo and Rinca

A walk with rangers to see Komodo dragons, the largest lizards alive and found only here. Snorkelling at Pink Beach in the afternoon.

Day 09 · Flores islands

Padar at dawn, manta rays at Manta Point and an anchorage with nobody in it. You sleep on board.

Day 10 · Labuan Bajo / Bali

Disembark and fly. Transfer to Ubud.

Day 11 · Ubud

The Tegallalang rice terraces first thing, craft workshops, and a temple ceremony if one coincides, which happens often.

Day 12 · Bali

A free day on the coast, or the climb up Batur for anyone still in the mood for volcanoes.

Day 13 · Bali / Spain

Flight home.

Day 14 · Spain

Arrival.
