Rwanda
An Hour with the Gorillas
9 days
The permit buys you one hour. No more and no less: when the guide checks his watch it is over, however close the family is feeding. That hour costs two to four hours of climbing through bamboo and nettles, and nobody comes back down saying it was not worth it.
Day by day
Day 01 · Spain / Kigali
Flight with one stop.
Day 02 · Kigali
Arrival and the city. The Genocide Memorial is not a pleasant visit, but it explains the country better than anything else, and Rwanda has decided the story should be told.
Day 03 · Volcanoes National Park
Two and a half hours north, to the foot of the volcanic chain shared by Rwanda, Uganda and the Congo.
Day 04 · Mountain gorillas
Groups allocated at seven, the climb with trackers, and an hour with the family you are assigned. In the afternoon, the community project in the village.
Day 05 · Golden monkeys and Dian Fossey
A second, shorter trek for golden monkeys in the bamboo, or the climb to Dian Fossey’s grave for anyone who would rather keep walking.
Day 06 · Lake Kivu
Down to the lake on a road of switchbacks through tea plantations. An afternoon with nothing scheduled, which by now is welcome.
Day 07 · Nyungwe
Primary montane rainforest, with chimpanzees and thirteen primate species. A canopy walkway sixty metres up.
Day 08 · Nyungwe / Kigali / Spain
Back by road or internal flight, and the connection home.
Day 09 · Spain
Arrival.
